by Josh Underwood

Jacksonville, AL (01/08/2025) — Jacksonville State University (Jax State) is proud to announce its advancement to the Network Leader phase of the FirstGen Forward Network, a national initiative dedicated to enhancing the success of first-generation college students. This recognition underscores Jax State's unwavering commitment to fostering a supportive environment for first-generation students.

According to the FirstGen Forward Network's release, it was established by NASPA and The Suder Foundation and employs a three-phase approach to assist higher education institutions in improving outcomes for first-generation students. Progressing to the Network Leader phase signifies Jax State's dedication to implementing effective, sustainable student success initiatives and institution-wide strategies.

"At Jacksonville State University, we are committed to empowering first-generation students by providing the resources and support necessary for their academic and personal success," said Dr. Christie Shelton, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Jax State. "Advancing to the Network Leader phase of the FirstGen Forward Network reflects our approach to addressing the unique challenges first-generation students face and our ongoing efforts to create an environment where all students can thrive."

As a Network Leader, Jax State will use a tailored process to transform its infrastructure and support systems, aiming to advance first-generation student success. This phase offers access to diagnostic tools, customized solutions, data reporting, and expert guidance, enabling the university to implement evidence-based strategies that align with its specific needs.

Jax State's advancement reflects its dedication to closing the achievement gap between first-generation students and their continuing-generation peers. By adopting tailored strategies and fostering a supportive campus culture, Jax State aims to enhance enrollment, retention, and overall success for first-generation students.
