Jax State to Host Premiere of Longleaf Studios' Latest Documentary on Former Alabama Governor Jim Folsom Jr.

Jacksonville, AL (02/18/2025) — Jacksonville State University's Longleaf Studios, in partnership with Alabama Public Television, will debut its latest documentary, A Legacy of Progress: The Jim Folsom Jr. Story, with a special premiere screening on Thursday, February 27, on the 11th floor of Jax State's Houston Cole Library. This exclusive event will offer attendees the first look at the film before it airs statewide on Alabama Public Television later that evening.

Produced by Longleaf Studios at Jacksonville State University, A Legacy of Progress: The Jim Folsom Jr. Story explores the transformative tenure of Alabama's 50th governor, Jim Folsom Jr., whose leadership played a pivotal role in modernizing the state's infrastructure, advancing racial relations, and spurring economic development. The film highlights Folsom's commitment to distancing Alabama from its segregationist past and his efforts to create a more inclusive and prosperous future. Among his many accomplishments, Folsom is credited with securing the Mercedes-Benz manufacturing plant in Vance, Alabama. This landmark achievement helped establish the state as a key player in the automotive industry.

The evening will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. in room 1103A, followed by the screening at 7 p.m. Immediately after the film, a distinguished panel of experts will take the stage at 8 p.m. to discuss Folsom's legacy and the documentary's broader themes. Moderated by Jacksonville State's Pete Conroy, the panel will include former Governor Jim Folsom Jr. and First Lady Marsha Folsom, Alabama political columnist Steve Flowers, former Alabama Finance Director Jim White, and Jax State alumnus Charlie Waldrep, who served as Folsom's Chief of Staff. The discussion will offer unique insights into Folsom's administration, Alabama's political landscape, and the lasting impact of his policies. The event will conclude at 9 p.m.

Additionally, the filmmakers behind the documentary-Seth Johnson, Joel Evans, and Rebekah Hall-Evans-will be present, along with Film and Design students who worked extensively on the production: Caleb Woods, Samantha Jiminez, and Abdul Bashiru Yussif. They will be available to answer questions about the filmmaking process, offering attendees a behind-the-scenes look at how the documentary was brought to life.

A second premiere event will be held on March 6 at The Library Theatre at Hoover Public Library, hosted by Alabama Public Television, The Library Theatre, and Longleaf Studios. This event will follow the same format, with a reception at 6 p.m., the screening at 6:30 p.m., and a panel discussion at 8 p.m. featuring the same distinguished guests.
